Camping in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park offers a variety of camping options for visitors looking to experience the park's natural beauty. Here is some important information about camping in Yellowstone:

1. Campgrounds:

  • The park has 12 campgrounds, with over 2,000 campsites available for tent and RV camping. Five campgrounds are open year-round, while seven are operated on a first-come, first-served basis during the summer season. Reservations are required for three campgrounds (Bridge Bay, Canyon, and Grant Village).
  • Each campground has different amenities, including picnic tables, fire rings, and restroom facilities. Some campgrounds also offer showers and laundry facilities.
  • It is important to check the campground's regulations and availability before planning your trip, as campsites can fill up quickly during peak season.

2. Campsite Fees:

  • There is a nightly fee for camping in Yellowstone National Park, which varies depending on the campground and the site type (tent or RV). The fees range from $15 to $32 per night.
  • In addition to the camping fee, there is also a park entrance fee of $35 per vehicle, valid for seven days. This fee gives you access to all the park's campgrounds.

3. Reservations:

  • As mentioned earlier, three campgrounds in Yellowstone (Bridge Bay, Canyon, and Grant Village) accept reservations, which can be made up to six months in advance. Reservations can be made online or by phone through the park's official website.
  • For first-come, first-served campgrounds, you need to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot, especially during the peak summer season.

4. Bear Safety:

  • Yellowstone is home to grizzly bears and black bears. It is crucial to follow bear safety protocols while camping. Store food, coolers, and anything with a scent in bear-proof containers or in the trunk of your vehicle. Do not leave any food unattended, and clean up your campsite thoroughly.
  • It is also recommended to carry bear spray with you and know how to use it effectively in case of an encounter with a bear.

5. Campfire Safety:

  • Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings or grills in campgrounds. However, due to fire danger, restrictions may be in place during dry periods. Check with the park authorities for any fire restrictions before lighting a campfire.
  • Make sure to fully extinguish your campfire before leaving the area or going to bed. Drown the fire with water, stir the ashes, and feel for any remaining heat. Only leave the area when the fire is completely cold to the touch.

Remember to respect the park's regulations, wildlife, and natural surroundings while camping in Yellowstone National Park. Enjoy your camping experience and take full advantage of the incredible beauty and wilderness this national park has to offer.
